What are some cozy, quieter bars in LA that a group of friends can go and actually hear each other talk?

I have some friends visiting from out of town that I haven't seen in a while and I want to be able to catch up with them. I'm looking for a place I can go to tonight (Friday night) that isn't too loud, doesn't have a velvet rope, and will be able to sit us at a table promptly. Please help. THANKS!
